The No.2 Louisville Cardinals (2-0) started the game clicking on all cylinders. The Cardinal defense held Samford (1-2) to just 4-20 shooting and 13 points in the first half.
Louisville center Gorqui Dieng nearly out scored Samford’s entire team as he ended the half with 10 points and 7 rebounds. Samford only grabbed 5 rebounds total in the first half compared to UofL’s 27. Louisville held a 42-13 lead at intermission.
Samford out scored Louisville 41-38 in the second half, but still lost 80-54. UofL got another strong performance from Russ Smith who again led all scorers with 18 points off the bench.
Louisville’s Luke Hancock continued to struggle with his shooting as he went 1-13 from the floor (1-11 three-point attempts). As usual, when Rick Pitino compliments an incoming player and sets the bar high, they struggle. However, I don’t see Hancock staying in this funk.
Chane Behanan and Dieng both contributed double-doubles. Behanan led all with 14 rebounds and 12 points. Dieng ended with 12 rebounds (9 offensive), 10 points, and dished out 5 assists. Peyton Siva ended with 7 assists and 7 points.
Samford’s leading scorer was Tim Williams who had 15 points.
Louisville will host Miami (OH) on Sunday at 4:00. The Redhawks (1-1) fell to No. 6 N.C. State 59-97 back on Nov. 9.
