Weekend Update - Cardinal Hoops

Plenty of action on the court and off for Louisville basketball over the weekend including the men’s basketball team getting a big road win at Memphis. In what Coach Rick Pitino called a “Big East” type crowd at the FedEx Forum in Memphis on Saturday Louisville had to rally from 16 points down to get their 9th win of the season.

Chane Behanan had 16 of his 22 points in the 2nd half to lead the Louisville comeback. Russ Smith  also had a big 2nd half with 13 of his 19 points in the 2nd period. Peyton Siva added 19 points as well. With the win Louisville improved to 9-1 on the season and Memphis fell to 6-3. Next up for the Cards Florida Int’l at the Yum Center on Wednesday night. FIU is coached by former Louisville assistant Richard Pitino. The Panthers are 3-4 on the season.

Also over the weekend Coach Pitino announced that sophomore Angel Nunez will transfer at the end of the semester. The 6’7 forward seemed to have been lost in the shuffle behind Kevin Ware and Luke Hancock and will look elsewhere for more playing time. Best of luck to Angel wherever he ends up.  The latest AP Poll has the Cards ranked 5th behind Duke, Michigan, Syracuse & Arizona.

The 8th ranked Lady Cardinals traveled to Colorado on Friday and were upset 70-66. The Buffalos improved to 9-0 on the year while the Lady Cards have now lost 2 of 3 to fall to 9-2. Louisville was without forward Sara Hammond who leads the team in rebounding and the Lady Cards were out rebounded 44-32. Antonita Slaughter led Louisville with 19 points. Next up for Louisville, Washington St. on Thursday night at the Yum Center.
