The Louisville Cardinals ended their three game slide hanging on to beat Pitt 64-61 tonight at the Yum Center.
Russ Smith had 20 points to lead all scorers while Gorgui Dieng added 14 points and 12 rebounds. Dieng also hit two big free throws in the closing moments to put the game away.
Louisville led by as many as 11 in the second half but could never put Pitt away. The Panthers hit seven 3’s in the second half to keep it close. Tray Woodall who led Pitt with 14 points hit a three with 13 seconds left to cut the lead to 60-58. Dieng added 2 free throws and after a Pitt air ball Smith added two more from the line pushing the deficit to six. Woodall hit a three at the buzzer for the final 64-61.
Pitt had won four in a row coming in but struggled from the foul line hitting just 3 of 12 from the charity stripe. Pitt who fell to 17-5, 5-4 will host Syracuse on Saturday. Louisville improved to 17-4, 5-3 will host Marquette on Sunday at the Yum! Center.
