The Louisville Cardinals were back in action Thursday night after the gut wrenching five-overtime loss to Notre Dame last week. Russ Smith had a big 2nd half to lead the Cards to a 72-58 win over St. John’s. Smith had 21 of his game-high 24 points in the 2nd half.
Louisville showed no signs of a letdown getting out to an early 11-3 lead. St. John’s answered with an 8-0 run of their own to tie the game. Louisville ended the half with an 8-0 run as well to take a 32-23 lead into halftime. The Red Storm wouldn’t go quietly scoring the first 10 points of the 2nd half to take the lead. Russ Smith started heating up at this point scoring 12 straight points for Louisville that pushed the lead to double-digits and Louisville would cruise from there.
Peyton Siva added 12 points and Gorgui Dieng had 10 points and 15 rebounds. St. John’s was led by Phil Green’s 21 points while D’Angelo Harrison had 18. St. John’s fell to 15-10, 7-6 on the season while the Cards improved to 20-5, 8-4. Louisville will travel to Tampa on Sunday to take on South Florida.
