On a night that saw one of the most gruesome sports injuries of all time, a rivalry can go too far.
I originally wanted to write an article about how Louisville overcame adversity and a tragic accident to pull out a completely lopsided win over the Duke Blue Devils tonight. Instead I find myself sickened by an in-state rivalry. Being a Kentucky resident and having Louisville and Kentucky fans as friends, it is impossible to get on social media sites. It makes me sick that Cardinal and Cat fans alike can talk ill will about players who have suffered tragic injuries.
In mid-February, University of Kentucky star freshman center, Nerlens Noel, torn his ACL on a hustle play against the Florida Gators. Noel is likely a top three pick in next year’s NBA Lottery Draft, if he decides to leave Kentucky and enter the NBA. Louisville and Kentucky fans alike hit the social media world to discuss the injury. Opposing team fans were saying they were glad he got hurt and he would not have helped UK in their tournament changes anyways. Saying something like that is completely ignorant and unethical all at the same time.
Tonight, Louisville guard, Kevin Ware, suffered one of the most horrific injuries I have ever seen. Once again, Louisville and Kentucky fans took to the social media realm to discuss the matter. Opposing team fans made jokes and mocked the team for the injury. Again, completely unethical in nature.
Sports and rivalry aside, whether you are a Kentucky or Louisville fan, the kids who are playing on the basketball court are just that, kids! They are 18-23 year old kids who have devoted their entire lives to get where they are today, play under the big lights in the NCAA. They have given their hearts, souls, and hours of practice to come this far. To poke fun at someone for an injury is completely ridiculous. Both the plays that Noel and Ware got injured on were hustle plays and freak accidents. Those two players give their hearts out play after play. It is very unfortunate that both players suffered injuries because of that reason.
I wish both Nerlens Noel and Kevin Ware the best of luck in the future and a speedy recovery. I look forward to seeing both play in the upcoming years because they hustle with everything they have and that is fun to watch. Best of luck to them both!
