Montrezl Harrell Leads the USA to a Gold Medal

Today was the Gold Medal Game for the U19 World Tournament.  USA vs Serbia.  Serbia looked to be the only team in the entire competition that could remotely challenge the United States, after suffering a 9-point loss to the US last week.  The only question today was how different the two teams were going to play, after being locked in a low-scoring battle in the last outing.

Today certainly was, by all accounts, different than the last matchup.  For one, the USA won by 16 points, thus winning the Gold Medal.  The whole game was not that much in the USA’s favor though.  At halftime, the USA was only up 40-38.  Serbia was in it until the very end.  Then the USA took off and never looked back.  Granted, it wasn’t their largest victory of the tournament, but it was huge considering that this was the toughest team they faced all summer.

And who was there to lead all scorers in the Gold Medal Game?  Why none other than Louisville’s own Montrezl Harrell.  Harrell finished the game with 17 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 blocks in what wound up being one of his best games of the tournament.  Montrezl Harrell, at 19 years old, is an NCAA Champion, a Big East Champion, and now a Gold Medal winner.  My God what a future he has.
