So for most of the past week there have been some light rumblings about the possibility of bringing on former Illinois and Florida head coach Ron Zook as recruiting coordinator/safeties coach for the Louisville Cardinals. As the week has gone on the rumblings have turned into all out talk. First, Footballscoop tweeted that they heard the same rumor but couldn’t confirm anything. Yesterday, Jeff Greer from the Courier Journal tweeted that he had confirmed from multiple sources that U of L and Ron Zook had indeed had discussions about hiring him. Next came Bobby Petrino’s press conference where he stated they would be filling the spot quickly. Now just this evening, Jeff Greer is tweeting that he was told the staff is complete but not confirmed yet.
Could it be that they hired Ron Zook? I sure hope so because it would be a huge hire. Say what you want about Zook as a head coach, but no one can deny his recruiting abilities or his ability to coach on defense. Zook brought in top tier classes at Florida and Illinois. He hired Bobby Petrino’s brother, Paul, as his offensive coordinator his last year coaching. While taking a break from coaching he has worked for a bank in Ocala, Fl and as an analyst for CBS Sports, and may be ready to hit the sidelines once again.
On the other hand, reports are starting to surface that the hire is actually Greg Brown the current secondary coach at Alabama. While not as well known as Zook, he has a resume a mile long that includes multiple NFL and top NCAA programs. His resume as a recruiter is a litter smaller. While Alabama had the top class last year, its hard to say how much Brown had his hand in bringing those kids there.
