The Louisville Cardinals women’s team are heading back to the Sweet 16 after dominating 6 seed Iowa on their home court. The win marks the fifth time Coach Jeff Walz has taken his team to the Sweet 16 in his seven seasons as head coach.
The Lady Cards were led by none other than Shoni Schimmel with 26 points. Antonita Slaughter added 17 with 5-6 from three point range, and a total of 5 Cardinals scored in double figures. Louisville opened a big lead in the first half and continued their spectacular play in the second half to come away with a 83-53 victory.
Louisville now gets to come home and play at the KFC Yum! Center on Sunday against 7 seed LSU. The Cards should be heavy favorites against the Tigers who upset 2 seed West Virginia tonight to earn their trip to the Sweet 16. Louisville played the then 14th ranked LSU Tigers on Nov. 14 in the preseason WNIT, with Louisville winning 88-67. Game time on Sunday is TBD and the game will be shown on either ESPN or ESPN 2.
