With the departure of Kevin Keatts, arguably Louisville’s best recruiter, Coach Pitino is once again forced to replace a key assistant. Pitino is not only one of the best at developing players, but as you can tell with his massive coaching tree he is also a great developer of coaches. This has him recruiting coaches as much as he does players; although recruiting new assistants might be even easier to Coach Pitino than recruiting players.
It looks like two names have emerged as the leaders to replace Kevin Keatts on Pitino’s staff. The first Louisville fans know pretty well in former assistant and father of another former assistant in Ralph Willard. Willard is a good friend of Pitino’s and has proven to have a keen eye for talent in being one of the guys responsible for Louisville bringing in Russ Smith.
The other hot name, and presumed front runner is current Indiana assistant Kenny Johnson. Johnson has strong ties to the AAU circuit and along the east coast especially in Maryland and Virginia. Johnson played a key role in Indiana landing Noah Vonleh, Troy Williams, Robert Johnson, and James Blackmon. The Maryland native is a big time recruiter and could get Louisville in the door of some elite recruits and strengthen the relationship with others already being recruited.
