It was confirmed this afternoon that Louisville’s second 7 footer in the 2014 class has officially signed.  Anas Osama Mahmoud joins a recruiting class that many are now beginning to say might be the best Rick Pitino has put together since arriving in Louisville back in 2001.  The class has two guys over 7 foot and while both will take some work, it is still very impressive, especially when considering the last person over 7 foot was Felton Spencer.

Rick Pitino said today that,

if Osama was able to put on enough muscle, he could play some this season, if not, he will likely redshirt

Courier Journal writer Steve Jones wrote that

he has a slightly torn meniscus and will have surgery in the coming weeks.

If that is the case, one can assume that it will all but confirm that Anas will be a redshirt this upcoming season.  It will be a situation where allowing him to fully heal and then spend the rest of the season learning the system will outweigh his early return.  Honestly, it is probably best that he has a season to bulk up, while not losing any of his eligibility.  I think he will be a special asset to our basketball team and something that we have always envied of other programs.  Having a player that is over 7 foot, who can hit a jumper, drive to the basket and create his own shot is something few teams get to enjoy.

Cardinal fans, think about this, eventually, (whether it is next season or not) there will be a 7 foot power forward and a 7’2 center on the court at the same time.  ACC be afraid, be very afraid.  L1C4.
