Rick Pitino to hire Kenny Johnson?

Rick Pitino to hire Kenny Johnson?

It is being reported that Rick Pitino has hired Kenny Johnson away from Indiana and Tom Crean. It was rumored earlier in the week that Louisville was in a bidding war with Maryland to land the assistant and it looks like Louisville has prevailed according to Evan Daniels of Scout.com. This seems like a surprising move on the behalf of Louisville Coach Rick Pitino if you listened to his press conference when he said he wanted someone to help coach the new big men on the way to campus. Coach Pitino had said he was looking for someone with as much gray hair as himself which led everyone to assume that Ralph Willard was on his way back to the staff for another stint. I personally like this move because it brings another big time recruiter on staff. Coach Johnson is a former AAU head coach and responsible for landing some big time recruits for Coach Tom Crean and Indiana. Coach Johnson is a Maryland Alum so this is a big steal for Coach Rick Pitino and staff, Expect an announcement from the University and Coach Pitino sometime in the next few days.

Also on another note Andre Mcgee might be looking to take a position with Kareem Richardson at UMKC as an assistant coach, this would allow him to recruit which he is not allowed to do currently in his position at UofL as director of basketball operations. Losing Andre Mcgee would suck but it would be a great opportunity for him to add to his resume.

If we lose Andre, and I believe we will, that will open the door for the Ralph Willard hire, we all expected. In fact, I will go out on a limb and say, Ralph Willard will accept the position of Director of Basketball Operations if Andre leaves. That will get him on staff and not lose a recruiting edge that we gained with the Kenny Johnson hire.
