Preparations are in full swing for the Louisville Cardinals, as we are less than two weeks away from the opening game against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels. Final roster spots are being designated, and the starting rotations are taking full form. Head coach Jeff Brohm has expressed his excitement for this team and the outlook the Cardinals have entering the 2025 season.
Louisville’s expectations vary from media source to media source. However, most are consistent with having the Cardinals finish the season as one of the top 5 teams in the ACC. Some even have Louisville playing for the coveted ACC Championship in December.
For Louisville to rise and meet those expectations, the Cardinals will need key players to step up into leading roles for coach Brohm. The responsibility these players will possess on this team, and their ability to thrive in this setting, will have a direct impact on the Cardinals' results. This season will also be a time for these players to prove their worth on the field and set themselves up for future success.
5 Louisville football players with the most to prove in 2025
5. Rodney Johnson, CB
Incoming senior transfer Rodney Johnson has emerged as the leader of the secondary under defensive coordinator Ron English. Johnson, who transferred in from Southern in the offseason, has stood out in fall camp and seemingly cemented his role as a starting cornerback. He’ll lead a position group with a lack of returning production and many question marks about their impact on the defense this season.
Johnson has an excellent opportunity to stand out in a group many are pointing to as a potential weakness for the Cardinals. His play on the field, especially early in the season, can work wonders for quieting those who had questions entering the season. It's a chance for Johnson to bolster a group that will be relied on as the safety net for the front seven and to make momentum-swinging plays.

4. Duke Watson, RB
Many eyes have been on Isaac Brown and his breakout year last season, as the preseason award watchlists have officially been set. However, Duke Watson had arguably one of the best ends to the season last season, as the second-string running back no less.
Watson’s 8.9 rushing yards per attempt and seven touchdowns to end the season were nothing to scoff at. It makes many wonder what Watson’s season would have looked like if he had had the whole season to work with.
Watson looks to battle against starter Brown for carries and production throughout the 2025 season. It's an opportunity for Watson to showcase his skill talents further, as well as show that the end-of-season performance was indeed not a fluke. He also has the opportunity to put himself in an excellent spot for time and production next season.
Ideally, this would be alongside Brown as a two-pronged running attack for the Cards once again. Time and results will give coach Brohm and Watson that answer.

3. TJ Quinn, LB
Senior TJ Quinn leads the linebacking group, which highlights the defense with the most returning production from last season. Junior linebacker Stanquan Clark has received the most preseason accolades and attention leading up to the season.
However, Quinn has the senior leadership and more experience that will be key to leading the group and the defense overall from a key position for defensive coordinator English. Quinn is the lone senior of this experienced group. It's an opportunity to put this experience to use and help not only tighten up the defensive front but also play his way into a potential post-college playing opportunity.
This will be a key season for Quinn; one where his play may be the difference in wins and losses. We know the offense is primed to be a scoring machine, but will Quinn and the defense be able to provide the needed stops in tense situations for the Cards?

2. Caullin Lacy, WR
Caullin Lacy’s season last year was cut short due to injuries, an unfortunate end to a season with plenty of preseason promise. Lacy returns to Louisville for his senior season to prove that the flashes of brilliance early last season were not just flukes, but a glimpse into the talent Lacy possesses.
He is primed to be a key target for incoming QB Miller Moss alongside returning senior wide receiver Chris Bell. Together, they look to lead a dynamic receiving attack to complement the returning rushing attack of Isaac Brown and Duke Watson.
Lacy has plenty to prove this upcoming season, especially if he wants to help lead Louisville to their second ACC Championship appearance in 3 seasons. His role will be key to the success of the offense. He can also prove his worth at the next level as a sure set of hands and a dynamic route runner. It will be exciting to see him and Moss connect and build that rapport as the season progresses.

1 Miller Moss, QB
Incoming USC transfer QB Miller Moss has used fall camp and practices to cement his spot as the team's undoubted starter to enter the season. After a rocky finish at USC, Moss has shown excellent accuracy and decision-making as the season grows closer.
Moss looks to avenge his name after being benched for inconsistency and his inability to keep the ball away from the opposing defense. Moss has had the most question marks after his transfer to Louisville, due primarily to last season.
Moss looks to play his way into a potential NFL picture as well. He chose well in Louisville for his final college football season. Look no further than last year’s QB Tyler Shough. He entered Louisville with the injury-prone stigma attached to his name and played his way into being a second-round draft pick.
If anyone will maximize the potential of a QB, it's Jeff and Brian Brohm. They have a proven track record to back up their success. And if Moss has the success that the Brohms and Cards fans are anticipating, it may be a fun, memorable season that all can look back on fondly.
