Louisville Football: What to Watch for in Louisville’s Annual Spring Game
By Cole Murray
Players who are missing the spring game
While the spring game is a great chance to get a look at a lot of players, some members of the team won’t be participating due to health concerns. Here are a few players to make note of:
Dae Williams– Williams is a guy who was having an excellent spring last year before tearing his ACL midway through camp. Remarkably, Williams came back halfway through the year last season and saw some significant game action. When in the game, Dae showed an ability to run down hill and always seemed to take a couple of tacklers with him any time he had the ball. It appears as though Dae Williams has injured his foot or his ankle as he’s currently wearing a walking boot. Although he’ll be missing the spring game, I believe his injury is nowhere as serious as the one he suffered last spring and I would expect he’ll be more than ready when September 1st rolls around.
TreSean Smith– Smith saw a lot of playing time as a true freshman last season, and I expect this year to be no different, as he performed well when called upon last season. Smith showed his ball skills last season as he intercepted two passes, both of them in the redzone. Smith had knee surgery after he suffered a nasty injury in the bowl game against Mississippi State, but he should be ready by the season opener.
Colin Wilson– Wilson was a highly touted recruit out of Florida coming into last season. He was a guy who had been injury prone in high school, but looked like a super star when he was on the field. Wilson missed the first couple of games due to a hand injury, but earned carries when he was medically cleared. Wilson looked good when he got the chance, but he unfortunately didn’t get long as he tore his ACL playing against Murray State. While his recovery is going well, Wilson is still not cleared for full contact which is why he won’t be participating in the spring game.
Jaylen Smith– While there has been no official word, I wouldn’t be shocked if Louisville’s returning receiver doesn’t take the field this Friday. He missed a few games last season with a wrist injury but still managed to put up great numbers. While he missed a couple practices a few weeks ago, Louisville didn’t disclose what the injury was, although Smith was seen in a walking boot. So, while he may very well play Friday, I wouldn’t be shocked if sat this one out as a precaution.
