#8 – Gorgui Dieng (2011-2013)

Career stats: 8.3 ppg, 7.9 rpg, 1.2 apg, 1.0 spg, 2..6 bpg

I can’t remember a more lovable player in Louisville history than Gorgui Dieng. His smile, story, and innocence was something that may never be forgotten.

Gorgui Dieng was a relatively unknown prospect who joined the Cards in 2011. When you watched him play, at times he looked awkward and clumsy like a 7th grader who hadn’t quite grown into himself, but you could always see there was raw potential there. If you didn’t see it, Rick was gon’ tell you about it.

Over time Dieng developed into a smooth and consistent offensive player, with great touch around the rim and even the ability to step out and knock down jumpers (I still think he hasn’t the craziest looking sling shot release), and an elite rim protector.

As I mentioned last week, fans (including myself) always wanted to compare their big men to David Padgett. His ability to have the offense run through him, and make the right play at the right time, was what you looked for in a Pitino big. While you would have never thought of it when looking at him, but Gorgui was the closest thing to a Padgett clone that we’ve seen. His ability to pass was incredible for someone of his size, and he was always willing to do whatever it took to get better.

Gorgui was the force down low that made opposing offensive players question whether it was worth taking it inside. If he didn’t block your shot, he was most definitely going to change the trajectory of it, and probably foul the s$%t out of you.

The impact Dieng had on the 2013 National Championship team as it’s enforcer is the reason he’s this high on our list. While he isn’t a guy who comes to the top of your mind as being a “top 10” Cardinal in the 2000’s in terms of talent, but his knack for doing the dirty work and little things necessary to win it all was of elite fashion.

We’ll be back next Thursday to break down players 7-4 as we get closer and closer to the top players to play for the Cards in the 2000’s. Who will be listed? Be sure to check back to find out.
