Louisville Football: 5 Players Primed for Breakout Seasons
By Jacob Lane
Josh Johnson – WR
Sophomore
Projected stats: 31 receptions, 405 yards, 2 touchdowns
Louisville could arguably have one of it’s best receiving corps in recent memory with Jaylen Smith, Dez Fitzpatrick, and Seth Dawkins all returning for the 2018-19 season, which is saying something. Not to mention receivers coach Lonnie Galloway will get Justin Marshall eligible for his first season after redshirting last year, along with Devante Peete who will be returning from injury. Plus there’s incoming freshman Tyler Harrell, Marcus Riley, and Tutu Atwell. Needless to say, the Cards are loaded at the position.
A name you may or may not know is Josh Johnson. The 5’11, 177 pound speedy receiver barely saw the field last season, only appearing in three games last season (3 receptions, 52 yards). But with Traveon Samuel deciding to transfer for his final year of eligibility, the Cards offense will be looking for a new slot receiver.. Enter Josh Johnson.
Johnson is a quick and athletic wide receiver with good route running abilities, who seems to be the early favorite to be in the slot come September 1st. Expect him to be pushed through camp by Tutu Atwell, the dynamic play making wide receiver, but Johnson should be able to win the battle out.
Johnson will give the Cards a great option over the middle of the field, and with defenses focused on Smith, Fitzpatrick, and Dawkins, it could allow for some big plays for the sophomore.
