Terry Rozier Could Be Nearing Contract Extention
Current Boston Celtic and former Louisville Cardinal Terry Rozier is primed to sign a new deal, but doesn’t want the attention to be on him.
Terry Rozier is about to get paid.
If not by his current team- the Boston Celtics- then by another NBA team. And it could happen very soon.
Rozier, who is entering his fourth year in Boston, has a contract that is up before the season begins. The Celtics and Rozier need to strike a deal, or Boston can exercise his fourth year contract extension that would pay Rozier upwards of $4.3 million this season.
On Wednesday, Celtics head coach Brad Stephens said of Rozier: “I think it’s very clear how all of us players, coaches and front office, people in Boston, everybody you run into, how they feel about Terry. And it’d be great if we could have him here for a long, long, time.”
Rozier, who was an electrifying bench player for much of his career, took advantage of the opportunity to start late in the season and throughout the Eastern Conference Playoffs in the absence of All-Star Kyrie Irving. Rozier went from averaging 11.3 points and 3 assists per game in the regular season to 16.5 points and 5.7 assists in the playoffs.
Along the way, Rozier was endearing to all of Boston in much the same way that he was to Louisville fans during his college career. He made a household name of himself on the court, as well as off of it as “Scary Terry.”
As we wrote during the playoffs, Scary Terry is no stranger to adversity. Now, on the cusp of the biggest season of his career with a healthy Celtics team who have a clear path to the NBA finals, Rozier has a chance to be a fan favorite that takes them there.
Rozier, however, says he doesn’t want his Scary Terry off-court fun, nor his contract talks, to be a topic of discussion that becomes a distraction.
“We’ve been trying to focus on us and I’ve been trying to take the pressure off the extension thing. So I’m focused on the team. If it’s right for me to sign an extension, I will. If it’s not, it still can happen in the summer.”
Terry now has an extremely tough decision to make if and when an extension offer is made by the Boston Celtics. After a breakout season in 2018, Rozier could be in line for a huge pay increase as well as a starting role in another city. However, the ability to win multiple championships with a core group that features three all-stars, Kyrie Irving, Gordon Hayward, and Al Horford, along with rising stars Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum could be too enticing to pass up.
That attitude is what put Boston in their current position as favorites in the Eastern Conference. In a league filled with distractions and antics, Rozier is able to tune that out and focus on what is truly important- doing his job to the best of his ability.
When that happens, big things will happen for Rozier- Maybe even another shot at an NBA title.
