Louisville has a true “Point Guard”

During the off season I kept wondering who was going to be the point guard on this team. I have written before about the importance of the point guard position and how never before, leading into a season did we not know what to expect from the Cardinals starting 1 guard. Christen Cunningham eased all of those nerves for me against Bellarmine. Cunningham is the floor general this team was in need of. Coach Mack summed it up perfectly in his post game press conference.

Cunningham play a team high 30 minutes against Bellarmine and added 10 points but only 1 assist. How can I suggest Cunningham is a true point guard while only having 1 assist? The basketball season is a long haul and Christen’s body language and style of play has team leader written all over it. He played well with Darius Perry who spent time at the one spot last season and even played off ball some allowing Perry to run the offense.

A floor general point guard does not always have to stuff the stat line. The flow of the offense goes through him. Setting up other players to succeed, knowing when to play off ball, and court vision are just a few things Cunningham does very well that will not show up in the box score. Cunningham is Samfords all time leader in assist and their 13th all time leading scorer so rest assured as the season progresses so will Cunningham’s stat line.
