Louisville football loses top offensive lineman commit for 2019
By Jacob Lane
As if things couldn’t get any worse for Louisville football, the class of 2019 now has one less commit.
Things are not fine at the present moment for the Louisville football program, I don’t think that-that is a secret by any means. After starting the season 2-1, the Cards have since lost five straight games and sit at a measly 2-6.
Unless something major happens in the next four games against the likes of #2 Clemson, #19 Syracuse, #21 North Carolina State, and #9 Kentucky, it is highly likely that the Louisville program could have a new coach on the sidelines in 2019-20.
With the struggle of the program and the rumors of Bobby Petrino being on the hot seat, it wasn’t long before it began to affect recruiting. The first step in that coming to fruition happened this morning, when the Cards highest rated offensive lineman commit, Jamari Williams, announced via Twitter, that he would be decommitting from the Cards and reopening his commitment.
Williams committed to Louisville back in May of this year, choosing Bobby Petrino and the Cards over the likes of Purdue, North Carolina State, Boston College, Kentucky, and Mississippi State.
Out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Jamari Williams is rated as a three star offensive guard, according to Rivals, and was seen as the Cards second biggest commitment in the class of 2019 behind Jaden Johnson.
It should come as no surprise that players committed to the Cards might have second guesses about their college decision on the heels of the early national signing day period. If the Cards were just “struggling” and having a down year, typically it would have little to no affect on the recruiting trail. However, with rumors of Bobby Petrino potentially being fired, coupled with how the Cards are being beat, it could make a player think a bit deeper about whether Louisville is the best spot to continue their football journey.
Jamari Williams was a guy who was expected to compete for playing time on an offensive line that has struggled mightily this season, so for him to decommit at this time could easily send bad messages to other players committed to Louisville.
Do not be surprised to see more players decommit over the coming days and weeks and honestly there’s really not much Louisville coaches can do to stop it. As they try to get things turned around on the field, they’ll have an equally tough job trying to sell their recruits and commits on a bright future.
The Cards now have 12 players committed to the program in a class that is currently ranked as the 63rd best recruiting class in the country, according to Rivals.
