The mass exodus of transfers and recruits continues for Louisville football.
In a matter of four days Louisville football has lost one football game by the score of 77-16, three commits from the class of 2019, and one key transfer.
Today, the transfer number grew from one to two.
93.9 The Ville’s, Mark Ennis, reported last night multiple sources confirmed that sophomore cornerback Russ Yeast had left the football program with the intent to transfer.
Last Friday it was announced by Louisville football head coach, Bobby Petrino, that freshman quarterback Jordan Travis was leaving the program via transfer.
It really came as no surprise that Travis was leaving, as there had been some noise (and fear) for weeks that Travis could leave before playing in his fifth game of the season, which would have prevented him from redshirting and retaining four years of eligibility.
In an interview with fan site, Cardinal Sports Zone, Travis talked about his decision to leave Louisville. His quote was short and sweet but yet described the state of the program. He told Jeff Nunn,
"“It was definitely different then my official visit. I was just very unhappy here.”"
In the case of Russ Yeast, there has been no official release yet from the Louisville football program. However, the news broken by Mark Ennis has been confirmed by Jake Lourim of the Courier Journal.
Russ Yeast, the son of former Kentucky star Craig Yeast, was a huge commitment for Bobby Petrino and the Louisville program last winter, when he chose the Cards over the likes of Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Purdue, and Oklahoma. The former Under Armour All-American stepped in and played a big role on the defense and on special teams as a freshman, finishing with 10 tackles and one tackle for a loss.
This season under Brian VanGorder, Yeast saw his role diminished significantly, losing playing time to the likes of Rodjay Burns, PJ Mbanasor, Cornelius Sturghill, and freshmen Chandler Jones & Anthony Johnson.
Losing Yeast isn’t a huge hit to the future of the program, as there are still several talented defensive backs on the roster. However, for a player to leave the program with just three weeks remaining and a few weeks of school, tells a bigger story.
There have been quotes from former players, and now even a transfer, confirming what we all believed to be true – the program has a bit of toxicity to it under Bobby Petrino and the current coaching staff.
Do not be surprised to see several more transfers over the coming days and weeks as typically there is quite a bit of turnover when a coach is fired and a new regime comes in (that’s assuming BP is let go).
As I said yesterday, hold on folks. The days are dark now, but the future is bright for Louisville football.
