Louisville football captain Jon Greenard reportedly will transfer away from the program for his senior season.

Just chalk this week in Louisville football history up to Murphy’s law. Whatever could go wrong lately, has.

Despite the heroic efforts of athletic director Vince Tyra, Louisville football is going to have a long road ahead to building the program the right way. After a disappointing decision by Louisville’s number one head coaching decision, Jeff Brohm, to turn down Tyra’s offer, Louisville players who were seemingly on the fence about transferring away from the program are much more likely to be looking elsewhere.

That was the case on Sunday morning when 2018 captain and team leader Jon Greenard was reported to be leaving the program.

According to Dave Lackford of Rivals.com, Greenard will finish out the last two weeks of this semester and graduate on December 14th, then he will transfer to Florida, where former Louisville defensive coordinator Todd Grantham holds the same title.

Greenard had a break out redshirt sophomore season for Louisville, when he lead the team in tackles for loss (15.5) and sacks (7). He was named a team captain going into his Junior year and, along with Jaylen Smith, was selected to represent Louisville at 2018 ACC media day.

Going into this season, many were optimistic about a Louisville defense that would be lead by one of the best pass rushers in the country. However, in the very first defensive series of the season, Greenard suffered a ligament injury in his wrist that put him out for the rest of the season.

Still, Greenard remained a vocal leader on the team, coaching up guys on the sideline and being front and center during every game. In the end, the Cards’s defense was horrifyingly bad, giving up 50+ points in their last 5 games, and 7 times during the course of the season.

Greenard will fit in nicely at Florida, where he will likely start on an already talented defense from day 1.

Louisville is left to pick up the pieces. Their defensive line is already in complete shambles, after being forced to play a lot of young, inexperienced pieces, or JUCO transfers that have not panned out as expected. Additionally, the Cards only have one defensive line commitment, 3-Star Denzel Daxon, for the 2019 recruiting class. Even Daxon is no guarantee- once a new coach inks a deal with the Cards, there is no telling who else will transfer or de-commit.

Whatever could go wrong lately for the Cards has gone wrong, but maybe that is the low point  this Louisville football team needed to reach. Now that they are at rock bottom, it is time for a full rebuild. That all starts with a new coach, new recruiting classes, and now, apparently, new team captains.
