One of the biggest areas of need for Louisville football is at the QB position. A highly touted JUCO star could be the answer.

It’s no secret to say that the Quarterback situation for Louisville football is sketchy at best, heading into the offseason.

In a season that many expected Jawon “Puma” Pass to step up and take over the reins as the next great Louisville QB, it was instead a revolving door of poor QB play for the Cards.

New Head Coach, Scott Satterfield, knows that one of the biggest priorities on his check list in the first few months is to find one, if not two, QB’s who can come in and compete against the aforementioned Pass and Malik Cunningham for the starting job in 2019-2020.

In a press conference at the KFC Yum! Center on Wednesday night, Satterfield was asked by the media about the potential of adding new QB’s to the Louisville roster for next season, specifically JUCO or Grad-Transfer players to which he had the following to say:

"“That’s certainly a possibility at that position, either (that) or a potential junior-college player there. And probably a high school player there, too. Again, that’s a pretty big need for us. I think if you look at any level of football, rec league, high school, college or pro, you have to have a trigger man.”"

A new name that quickly emerged over the last 24 to 48 hours as a potential fit at the Quarterback position for Louisville football is JUCO star Messiah deWeaver.

If you’re a recruiting buff like myself, you may remember that name (it’s hard to forget someone named Messiah let’s be honest) from a few years back. Coming out of Huber Heights, Ohio in the class of 2016, deWeaver was a ESPN 300, four star recruit, with offers from the likes of Michigan, Penn State, Mississippi State and even Louisville. He eventually committed and signed with Michigan State, but didn’t last long.

In 2017 he transferred out of Michigan State after a redshirt season after appearing in just two games in his second season. He landed at the infamous East Mississippi Community College, which had appeared on the show “Last Chance U” on Netflix for two seasons and was coached by Buddy Stephens.

Just like John Franklin II and DeAndre Franklin, who both transferred to EMCC after being highly touted recruits and playing for blue blood programs, deWeaver stepped in and had a huge year, quickly gaining notoriety on the recruiting trail once again. He finished the season with 1,735 passing yards and 10 touchdowns, all while leading the school to another National Championship.

247 Sports writer, Bill Green, wrote this week that one of the schools who was interested in adding deWeaver to their roster was Louisville, pre-Scott Satterfield. But after the coaching change, deWeaver had yet to hear from the new staff just yet. deWeaver told Green:

"“I wouldn’t really say there is a favorite in that group of schools for me, and I’m just listening to what everybody says about their programs,” he continued. “I was talking to Louisville a lot before the coaching change, so now I need to see where things are with them."

Currently deWeaver holds offers from several high powered mid-major programs including Central Michigan, Toledo, and Southern Mississippi, but is hearing from Louisville and Vanderbilt.

Now hoping to make a decision soon, deWeaver has made it known that he would like a chance to play for Satterfield and the Louisville Cardinals.

This is definitely a situation worth monitoring over the coming weeks as Scott Satterfield and his staff (which should soon be announced) get out and hit the recruiting trail hard before the December 19th signing day period.

Though there is talent on the roster at the QB position in Puma Pass and Malik Cunningham, two guys who were completely underdeveloped by the previous regime, adding a new face (or two) is absolutely the right move by the coaching staff, especially as they operate under a new system.

He may not be the Cards messiah, but he certainly would have a chance to make an immediate impact in Louisville for Scott Satterfield and company.
