Ranking the most important Louisville football players in 2019-20
By Jacob Lane
Year: Junior
2018 Statistics: 25 tackles, 11 solo tackles, 1.0 TFL
A 6’6,” 295 wrecking ball, Goldwire was one of the lone positives on Louisville’s defense in 2018. He played in 8 games, but still recorded 25 tackles, including 11 solo. The transfer from Fort Scott Community College played in four less games than last season and still recorded similar numbers.
Louisville needs Goldwire to stay healthy and continue to make strides in 2019 in order to clog up the middle for this inexperienced defensive line. The Cards lacked the ability to get to the quarterback in 2018, and the middle of the defensive line was rendered completely ineffective in the run game.
Again, the play of the defensive line was more of an indictment on the coaching staff than the players. Goldwire has the talent to help Louisville take the next step towards improvement, and with the right coaching and play-calling, could be a huge asset for the Cards going forward.
Look for the new staff to try to build around a guy like Goldwire. He has experience playing with this unit, will likely be a Cardinal for the next two years, and could be a huge piece helping along players in what will be a vital 2020 recruiting class.
