Louisville football has already landed one graduate transfer at the tight end position, could another high profile transfer be on the horizon?

As of Sunday, Louisville football had just one scholarship tight end on the roster for the 2019-20 season after losing Micky Crum to graduation and Kemari Averett to legal troubles. If you haven’t heard by now, Scott Satterfield and Stu Holt, Louisville’s new TE coach, make that position a very important focus on the offense. That means having just one player on the depth chart is not good.

That’s until Vanderbilt transfer, Ean Pfeifer – a former offensive lineman, announced that he was going to spend his final season at Louisville and he would be making a position switch to TE.

Now with two tight ends along with multiple players on the roster who could be moved from their current position, including guys like Adonis Boone (OT), Tobias Little (RB/FB), and even a guy like Seth Dawkins (WR), it’s allowing Scott Satterfield and his staff to take their time in finding the right guy.

Louisville put out a lot of feelers to several tight ends who were still available after the Early Signing Period, and seem to be in a good place with a few including 3 star Tyler Devera.

But with the immediate need at the position coupled with the glaring holes at other position, a graduate transfer could be a better option than a 2019 freshman. One name that has recently had a lot of speculation around it recently is Virginia Tech transfer Chris Cunningham, who announced he was leaving the Hokies, but there wasn’t any word on interest in Louisville from Cunningham.

Today we learned via Twitter, that Chris Cunningham did indeed have interest in Louisville and that he would be visiting Scott Satterfield and the Cards in the next few weeks.

Cunningham should be familar with the University of Louisville as he was recruited by Bobby Petrino and the former Louisville football staff out of high school as a three star from Jacksonville, Florida.

The junior tight end has been a reliable target for Justin Fuentes and the Hokies, who he chose over the likes of Louisville, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Illinois and several other power 5 schools, totaling 22 receptions, 297 receiving yards, and 7 touchdowns through his career. Cunningham played in a reserve role for the majority of his time at Virginia and will likely be looking to land at a program with a large role for him.

With National Signing Day just a few days away, it’ll be interesting to see how Coach Scott Satterfield plays his cards with the recruits they are currently pursuing. Will he save room for Cunningham? Or will the staff decide to role with someone like Tyler Devera.
