With National Signing Day less than 24 hours away Louisville football secured a commitment from an athletic and versatile tight end.

Coming into the offseason Scott Satterfield and his Louisville football staff had their work cut out on the recruiting trail. As I detailed ad nauseam this morning in our annual National Signing Day Primer, Louisville’s roster was more poorly managed than the McDonald’s on Floyd Street (if you haven’t been to this McDonald’s, don’t, don’t ever, it’s horrible) due to the horrible recruiting and roster allocation of one Bobby Petrino.

Scott Satterfield took over a roster with one tight end, just five offensive lineman, and 30 wide receivers, with the goal of rebuilding the offense in a way that has helped him to be one of the most successful coaches in the nation during his time at App State.

In the last few weeks the staff has worked night and day to rebuild a recruiting class that at one time ranked in the mid 50’s nationally, but during the early signing period, was left with just four players to sign letters of intent.

Now with NSD upon us the Cards have 5 commitments ready to sign and the potential to add 4-6 more. One of the biggest positions of need was tight end for the Cards, a position that Scott Satterfield utilizes more than just about any other coach in the ACC.

With just Jordan Davis returning, and Ean Pfiefer committing after graduating and transferring from Vanderbilt, the Cards still needed one more tight end. Until today.

Just a while ago, three star athlete Dez Melton took to Twitter to announce his commitment and intentions to sign with Louisville.

I wrote about Melton this morning, who is a 6’4, 205 pound athlete who played wide receiver/running back at his high school in Glendale, AZ, that will play tight end at Louisville.

"It doesn’t take long to watch the highlights of Dez Melton and be 100% intrigued. Playing high school ball in Glendale, Dez Melton did a lot of everything. He played wide receiver, running back, and even returned kicks – but is being listed as a tight end at the next level. At 6’4 Melton has great size for the tight end position, but at only 205 pounds still has a lot of room to grow. With guys like Ean Pfeifer (Vanderbilt graduate transfer) and Jordan Davis on the roster for 2019, adding Melton would give the Cards a completely different type of player at the position – one who could be a legitimate option over the middle of the field and even stretch the defense."

You can catch his full highlights here.

Dez Melton was one of the handful of visitors from this past weekend and had already visited Iowa State and San Diego State previously. 247 Sports has him ranked as the 1746th best player in the country and the 147th best athlete.

Even with him being just 205 pounds, Melton gives Satterfield and company a very unique player at TE, one who will be able to stretch the field and open up space. He will need to hit the weight room extremely hard this summer, but don’t be suprised to see him get solid playing time during his first season on campus.
