Evan Conley – QB

If I had tried to sell you on Evan Conley during the Bobby Petrino era, I think you would have laughed in my face and said something along the lines of “yeah right, if he’s playing here than Van Halen shouldn’t be our third down music.”

Here we are on the first day of Spring Ball and Conley is signed & on campus after having no power five offers and being considered a 2 star for the majority of his recruitment, and legitimately has a chance to win the starting job in 2019. How’s that for a story?

Conley is an early enrollee who has already begun grabbing headlines and impressing his teammates and coaching staff in just a matter of weeks. When talking about Conley you’ve heard people refer to him as a diamond in the rough and a guy who in three or four could be the best player from the inaugural Scott Satterfield recruiting class.

Some of the things said about Conley alone would make the average fan who doesn’t follow recruiting excited about his potential. His high school coach spoke to Gentry Estes of the Courier Journal and when asked about what he brings to the table said:

"“Very high football IQ, and he’s really, really accurate. He knows where to throw the ball, and he knows where not to throw the ball.”"

If you watched any of Louisville football’s games last year you know that-that was something that none of the four QB’s who played could do. But that’s not it, when people talk about Evan Conley there’s a certain name they all throw out that is no name to drop without reason. That name – Baker Mayfield.

"“He can do things like that. People, they don’t know what they’re getting. … I think Louisville is going to be really, really happy with him.”"

Conley is just 6’0, which makes the comparison a bit of low hanging fruit, but it’s his play on the field. The ability to scramble and make ridiculous throws on the run. The ability to improvise like a five year veteran. The ability to squeeze the ball into tight spaces that literally have .01 seconds of availability. Not to mention his leadership, and desire to win – all which make him the perfect player for the Scott Satterfield culture turnaround.

All of this are reasons to be excited and to really begin considering if Conley could be a starter for Louisville this season.

While I’m not quite ready to throw out the idea of Puma Pass becoming the player we thought he could be with the proper QB coaching (looking at you Dick Petrino) or even Malik Cunningham, who on paper is a perfect fit for Scott Satterfield’s offense – Conley presents a legitimate challenge due to his incredible work ethic.

We’ve named just five players of the 16 player recruiting class for Scott Satterfield and the Cards, but there are plenty of other guys who could have an immediate impact. Guys like Dez Melton (TE), Aidan Robbins (RB), Dorian Jones (ILB), Zach Williamson (OT), and many others.

Football is still a little under seven months away but with spring ball kicking off this week, it’s not too early to begin dreaming about the future.
