8. Quarterback

Returnees: Jawon Pass (R-Jr.), Malik Cunningham (R-So.)

Newcomers: Evan Conley (Fr.)

Not returning: Sean McCormack (Transferred to Western Ky.)**

Projected starter: Jawon Pass

Player to watch: Evan Conley

** = Walk-on

There should still be some hope at the QB position regardless of what we saw last season between Jawon Pass and Malik Cunningham, who both struggled mightily under Petrino.

Pass still has all the talent in the world and with the proper tutelage of Scott Satterfield and Frank Ponce could take a step forward, especially if he can get some better blocking. However, he’s really not a great fit in this offensive scheme, seeing as how he can’t get outside of the pocket with ease.

Malik Cunningham on the other hand can move the pocket and make plays with his legs, but his inability to complete passes down the field is a huge issue. His 59% completion rating should be a rather concerning number for Satterfield and Ponce, but his fit in the offense and again getting the proper coaching should help that improve. But does he have the arm strength to keep defenses honest?

Evan Conley, a three star freshman who enrolled early and took part of spring practice, is the wildcard here. Though he had no power five offers, his work ethic and arm strength could help him leapfrog over Pass and Cunningham for the starting job. However, there should be concern about him going from non-power five recruit to starting ACC quarterback in my opinion.

This is another position where I would 100% expect the Louisville staff to try and target a transfer who can play right away post spring practice for programs across the country.
