Amonte Caban – DE

RS senior

Scott Satterfield and staff have spent time praising the effort of players both collectively and individually this offseason. With the new holistic scheme and culture change, several players have stepped up to the occasion while others have fallen short of the mark set for them, which has resulted in either them transferring or being asked for more.

One player who has been praised however is veteran defensive lineman, Amonte Caban. The former three star recruit started as a linebacker under Todd Grantham, and stayed there under Peter Sirmon, before ultimately being moved to a defensive line role under BVG this past season.

After the injury to Jon Greenard, Caban was one of many players who stepped into a primary role but was only a few who actually thrived, finishing the season with 50 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and two sacks.

Now heading into his senior season, having only played in 23 career games, Caban is going to be counted on to be the leader of the Cardinals defense.

Joining Mark Ennis on 93.9 The Ville, Satterfield praised Caban and the entire defensive line for their improvement saying,

"“On defense, the defensive line will fit nicely in our scheme. We are switching from a four down to a three down but we have some guys there. Amonte Caban is one who stands out for us. That could be a surprise spot for us.”"

Moving from a 4-3 to a 3-4, Caban will have to learn a new scheme for the fourth time in four years, but expect the 6’1, 253 pounder to thrive this season. When it comes to learning the scheme, Bryan Brown believes it’s not difficult saying,

"“Our defense is not tough. It’s not hard to learn. It’s very, very simple."

Allowing a guy like Caban the ability to not be bogged down with pre-snap reads and assignments or having to learn complex blitzes, should allow him to thrive in his new role and really step into the potential that many knew he could one day fulfill.
