Who will be Louisville football’s next NFL Draft selections?
By Jacob Lane
Dez Fitzpatrick – WR
RS junior
If Louisville is going to have a first-round selection in the 2020 or 2021 NFL Drafts, my money would be on Dez Fitzpatrick.
After breaking records and garnering national acclaim as a freshman for Louisville and quickly becoming one of Lamar Jackson’s favorite receivers, Fitzpatrick couldn’t seem to find any rapport with the quarterbacks during the 2018 season, to no fault of his own.
Fitzpatrick’s elite route running and great hands were still on full display for Louisville last season when Malik Cunningham, Jawon Pass, and Jordan Travis were able to get him the ball, but unfortunately, it was never enough.
It’s not just the flashy things that we often look for in wide receivers that have made Dez Fitzpatrick great during his time at Louisville. Whether it’s blocking, running routes in full speed even knowing the ball’s not coming his way, or making adjustments in routes to get open and track down the ball, the junior receiver literally does it all.
It’s a shame that he wasn’t able to build upon his success as a freshman last season, but with Gunter Brewer and Scott Satterfield here now, there’s no denying that Fitzpatrick has a special season ahead (depending on his quarterback getting him the ball).
I think Fitzpatrick right now, just based off what he’s done in two seasons, is a third to fourth round guy, but with a big season as a junior and maybe even coming back for his fifth season on campus, it wouldn’t shock me at all to see him go as a high as the second round in 2020 or 2021.
