Louisville football: Comparing the tale of two completely different staffs
By Alex Stengel
Wide Receivers
The old – Lonnie Galloway
Lonnie Galloway was one of the few coaches on Petrino’s staff that was not close to retirement and actively employed by another Power 5 program prior to joining Louisville. Now at North Carolina, Galloway is going into his 24th year working with receivers at the collegiate level. Looking back at the overall makeup of last years football staff, I have more respect for Galloway now. Unlike a fair amount of his former counterparts – he brought a solid amount of value with him to Louisville in terms of his player development, and Power 5 experience.
Even as one of the few bright spots on the former staff, I still believe Satterfield’s coaching choice will elevate Louisville’s strong receiving corps this year.
The new – Gunter Brewer
Coach Brewer is a big fan of Freaks – his terminology, not mine.
Louisville has seen many gifted and athletic freaks at the wide receiver position throughout the years, with a few currently on the roster. This should make any Louisville fan with knowledge of Coach Brewers history excited that he is on staff.
Gunter Brewer has an impressive and lengthy coaching resume, with a fun and energetic swagger to go with it. This past season Brewer was on the Philadelphia Eagles sideline, coaching a wide-receiver corps into the playoffs. Although he was with the Eagles for just one season, Brewer is no stranger to working with NFL talent throughout his career.
The Biletnikoff Award is one of college football’s most prestigious, given to the most outstanding receiver every year. Gunter Brewer is in rare company, being one of only THREE coaches in the country to coach multiple Biletnikoff winners (Randy Moss, Justin Blackmon).
Adding to the name drops, Brewer has also coached other high-level NFL caliber receivers such as Dez Bryant, Alshon Jeffery, and Nelson Agholor just to name a few.
The combination of Brewer’s college and recent NFL coaching experience could pay dividends for Louisville, as there are currently pro caliber players on the roster that will be able to benefit from his knowledge.
With a new offensive system in place, “Freaktime” could spell fun time for Louisville’s receivers this season.
