Cornerback

Jamel Starks

If there is a player that people are going to be sleeping on going into the 2019 season, it has to be incoming freshman Jamel Starks.

Despite his 3-star rating, this guy is an absolutely gifted playmaker who is a big-time get for the Cards. He played two ways in high school but starks projects as a corner for Louisville.

Starks chose Louisville over Nebraska, West Virginia, and NC State among a large group of power five teams vying for his services. People were in on him because he is a multi-faceted guy with signs pointing towards him being a hard-hitting corner, or even rotating over to safety a la Russ Yeast.

It’s tough to pinpoint why there’s not much talk about Starks around the program. He is one of the biggest recruits coming in for the 2019 season with an extremely high ceiling. Perhaps it is due to Louisville’s depth in the secondary.

The Cards boast a strong rotation of Anthony Johnson, Chandler Jones, PJ Mbannasor, TreSean Smith, and the aforementioned Yeast in the secondary. That is a really quality mix of talent and experience returning. However, out of all those names, Starks still seems to fit the mold of a Bryan Brown defense better than nearly anyone.

If there’s a name to look out for to maybe push to run with the ones and twos that you aren’t expecting, it has to be Starks.
