Wide receiver

Keion Wakefield

Even after losing multiple receivers to seniority or transfer, the Cards are still probably the deepest at wide receiver. However, if there’s an opportunity for a break-out wide receiver in 2019 it’s in the slot.

Tutu Atwell seems like a near lock to get a lot of snaps in the slot position, but behind him, there is some emerging talent too. One name to look out for is Louisville Male product, Keion Wakefield.

Wakefield, a redshirt junior, was an exciting prospect but hasn’t had a chance to shine yet. He redshirted during his freshman year and was out with an injury during his entire second season. Then in 2018, he saw time as a reserve, but only recorded one reception for seven yards.

After the departure of some key pieces in the slot, Wakefield could split snaps with Atwell and graduate transfer Thomas Jackson.

As a prospect, Wakefield was the No. 1 receiver in his class in the state of Kentucky. He has 4.4 speed and is a solid pass catcher, similar to former Cards slot receiver Eli Rodgers. The Cards are solid at wide receiver, but if you’re looking for a playmaker who could emerge as an underrated guy out wide, Wakefield is a name to watch for.
