An improved supporting cast won’t hurt

Like any All-Star, Mitchell can’t do it on his own. He has certainly had help with players like back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert, Ricky Rubio, and Derrick Favors among others. However, the Jazz have still been Mitchell, Gobert, and a slew of career NBA roleplayers during his first two seasons.

This offseason, the Jazz let go of Rubio and will take a hit by letting Favors move on. However, they cleared enough cap space to bring in some other players who will be All-Star game contenders in 2020.

The headline signing for the Jazz was point guard Mike Conley, who’s veteran leadership and savvy will pair with Mitchell astutely. Conley has played twelve years in the league and has a lot of backers who believe that he should have been an All-Star long ago.

On the wing, the Jazz added rising star Bojan Bogdanovic, a 7-year veteran who appears to just be hitting his stride in the league. Last season was his best yet, as he averaged 18 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2 assists for a solid Indiana Pacers squad. He was the second-to-last selection in the 2011 draft and has worked his way up to a 4-year, $73 million deal with the Jazz. He is not as likely of an All-Star candidate as Mitchell, Gobert, and Conley. However, Bog is still safely inside the league’s top 100 players.

The Jazz’s roster has improved exponentially for the 2019-20 season, and it only stands to benefit their best player.

A look around the league and it’s easy to see the new mold of successful NBA front offices. Every All-Star caliber player is paired with another top tier player. There are some extremely formidable duos: Lebron James and Anthony Davis, James Harden and Russell Westbrook, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. Now, Mitchell, Conley, and Gobert unite to form one of the best two-way trios in the league.

With help on the way, Mitchell’s game can now have a shot at reaching its full potential. No more double teams, shading towards his side of the court or scheming to just stop one guy. Mitchell will have a team of capable and willing passers, but also a group that can carry the load when needed.

This should allow Mitchell to get off to a hot start in 2019-20, build his brand even more, and increase his chances of becoming an NBA All-Star.
