Big Red Louie Podcast: Louisville football preview and special guests
By Jacob Lane
We’re almost one month away from the kickoff of the Louisville football season. We talk predictions with 247 Sports Barton Simmons and relive the golden days with Senorise Perry.
It’s been an interesting couple of weeks in The Ville with the 2019 ACC Kickoff giving us quite a bit to talk about and react to for Scott Satterfield and the new look Louisville football program.
Along with 13 other coaches, including two others new to the ACC, Scott Satterfield took the stage at 2019 ACC Kick-Off (aka Media Day) and had a lot to say about his new school, some good and some not so good.
Junior linebacker Dorian Etheridge and senior wide receiver Seth Dawkins were alongside Satterfield and provided a lot of insight into the locker room last season during UofL’s 2-10 finish, and what has changed since.
On episode 11 of the Big Red Louie Podcast, myself (Jacob Lane), Presley Meyer, Ethan Sprowles, and Alex Stengel discussed at length the comments by Scott Satterfield and what they tell us about the 2019 season. Whether it was his comments about the lack of overall talent, what he didn’t know about the program last season, the quarterback competition heading into fall camp, or the general state of the program, it provided us new access to the team and overall sent the message of how it’s going to take time to rebuild.
One comment that stuck was from Satterfield, he said:
"“I think the first impression was that when I first saw these guys, they were obviously very hungry. Had a bad taste in their mouth of what happened last year. They want to be good. So they were very welcoming for myself and our staff to coming in. They were like, Coach, we’re ready to work. What do we need to do?Our first thing we did, put our arm around them, loving them a little bit. (Say) ‘here is the plan, here is what we have to do.’We have a great core of leaders on our team, great guys that want to be good. They’ve worked extremely hard this off-season. I’m excited about getting them on the field and let’s see what we can do.”"
Another major talking point was the ACC Media voting Louisville last in the ACC preseason standings. This came as no surprise but it lead us to into discussion about the potential teams that Louisville could “upset” and how four or five wins may be possible.
On the show, we also were joined by two great guests. Barton Simmons, the Director of Scouting for 247 Sports, joined us to talk about his recent predictions of Louisville’s schedule on “Barton Makes Picks“. He talked about how Louisville could find their stride late after going taking lumps through the early and middle parts of the season, and how Jawon Pass could be taking a similar path to redemption as Felipe Franks did for the University of Florida.
Talking with Barton Simmons, we also covered Louisville football recruiting and particularly what Scott Satterfield and his staff have done to attract top talent so quickly. Having scouted hundreds of recruits all over the country, Barton was able to provide expert analysis and an in-depth look into the program, talking about how Satterfield landing Chubba Purdy and Tee Webb signals a bright future.
Also joining the show was former Louisville running back Senorise Perry, now of the Buffalo Bills, who talked about his new team, reporting to training camp, how his number selection stirred up quite a storm this offseason, as well as his days playing for Charlie Strong and playing alongside Teddy Bridgewater.
While the primary conversation in Louisville has centered around football, we also talked a bit about Chris Mack and his Louisville basketball program is preparing for the 2019-2020 season. Selecting paintball teams was quite a debate (I still believe my team was best), as was Darius Perry’s big offseason and what his role should be this season, and whether this year is going to be “the year” or “the year before the year” for the Cards when it comes to competing for a National Championship.
