Louisville football once again has a combination of high-level talent and big question marks at the pass-catcher positions. How will that affect the 2019 depth chart?

We’ve known for several years that the wide receivers for Louisville football are dynamic, with the potential to be special. With guys like Dez Fitzpatrick, Tutu Atwell, and Seth Dawkins in the fold, the Cards have three legitimate weapons who combine to do a lot of impressive things on the football field.

Once he arrived on campus as the new head football coach of the Louisville program, Scott Satterfield quickly confirmed he believed that to be true for him as well.

Even with dynamic weapons who can make plays in the short, intermediate, and long passing game, there’s been a real lack of production. The problem hasn’t been the receiver’s skills, or lack thereof, or even a bad scheme. The problem was the lacking of a quarterback who was able to get them the ball in areas where they could succeed.

Heading into 2019, once again the thought exists that Louisville could have one of the top groups of receivers in the ACC, regardless of what others might think, and what will make this season different is a head coach, receivers coach, and other personnel who will make sure that they are put in positions to help the team win.

While the position has been severely mismanaged over the last few years by the previous staff, leaving a shortage at the other pass-catching position, tight end, as well as others. Even with several transfers this offseason, the Cards head into 2019 with eight or more receivers who could see playing time this season.

Things are looking up at the tight end position, as well as the H-back spot, but compared to the receiver group it’s night and day.

When Satterfield and his staff took over in December of last season, they were left with just one scholarship tight end remaining on the roster. Knowing that the position was crucial to their success on offense, they set their eyes on the recruiting trail and were able to land a mix of talented graduate transfers and freshmen.

They also made a few adjustments to the roster, moving guys around and putting them in a new role where they could see the field quicker while filling a need.

The success of the pass-catching positions will depend on improved offensive line play under Dwayne Ledford as well as the ability to Jawon Pass, Malik Cunningham, or Evan Conley to get them the ball.

So who will see the field this year? What will the depth chart look like? We answer those questions and more starting with who you should be watching.
