Ranking the 25 most important players for Louisville football in 2019
By Alex Stengel
There are very few players I’m excited to see more than sophomore Tutu Atwell this season.
Even during one of the worst seasonal performances in Louisville football history, Atwell still showed at times why he is ready to become a human highlight reel on offense this season.
For the sake of redundancy, or maybe laziness (this is a long article), BRL’s Jacob Lane wrote a recent piece highlighting why Tutu is poised to be a star this season –
"‘2019 is the perfect storm for Tutu Atwell to step into stardom. At the slot receiver position, Atwell is dynamic over the field and running routes to the outside. There aren’t many corners with the speed to handle him, regardless of his size due to his blazing speed. Atwell has been clocked as running a 4.2 40-yard dash and on the field, it’s easy to see just how special his speed is. With the offense so focused on running the ball and dominating on the ground, Atwell is a potential decoy in the backfield or another change-of-pace back who can line up with the likes of Hassan Hall, Javian Hawkins, Dae Williams, or Aidan Robbins, and do incredible things. Whether it’s lining up in the pistol, RPO, or even in the triple-option, Atwell is a homerun threat literally every time he touches the ball. Third but certainly not last, Atwell is a former quarterback who as a dual-threat playmaker out of Miami Northwestern high school, the same school that produced Teddy Bridgewater, dominated some of the top defenses in all of Florida.’"
With years of experience coaching NFL superstars such as Randy Moss and Dez Bryant, new Louisville WR coach Gunter Brewer really likes what he sees in Atwell:
Brewer will have a really unique playmaker in Atwell who they can use in a variety of ways as Jacob wrote before. He’s continually been talked about as the fastest players on the team, and with a focus on doing creative and innovative things in the past in running and throwing the football, I would expect Atwell to be at the forefront of that this season.
Satterfield has repeated this sentiment many times throughout the preseason: We’re going to get the ball to the playmakers so they can make plays.
Simple enough.
If the staff can find creative ways to get the ball in Atwell’s hands, he will do just that.
