Ranking the 25 most important players for Louisville football in 2019
By Alex Stengel
For any fans that have followed recruiting and roster changes throughout the offseason, you’ll be hard-pressed to find any Louisville football addition with more buzz and excitement surrounding him than Ty Tyler.
As I previously said a few slides ago, seeing significant and immediate changes on either side of the ball is a very tall order in just one offseason. You need a better coach, a better system, and more playmakers.
As one of 2019’s Top 100 players in college football (according to a FanSided.com list), Tyler is a huge addition to Louisville’s defense this season – making an immediate impact on the D-line.
At 6’3” 270-pounds, Tyler is coming to Louisville with a chip on his shoulder, using his final season to show that his talents belong on the Power 5 stage.
He comes into Louisville for his one and only season in 2019 having accrued just two fewer total sacks individually than the Cardinals did as a group in 2018 (finished with 11 sacks). Each season he’s had at least four sacks, with nine being his highest total in 2018, and finishing with six as a redshirt freshman.
With over 50 quarterback hurries and a combined 19 sacks through his three years on the field, Louisville will have their first legitimate pass rusher since James Hearns and Trevon Young a few years ago.
In 2017 and 2018, Louisville struggled to get after the quarterback recording only 38 sacks total in that time period (which at least 15 teams had more total sacks in 2019 alone). Alongside Caban, Peterson, and the other rotation of players, as well as having playmakers behind him like Etheridge, Tyler should be able to easily lead the team in sacks in 2019.
For a Louisville defense that hasn’t shown great success pressuring QB’s in recent years, that can significantly change with a beast like Ty Tyler.
