Ranking the 25 most important players for Louisville football in 2019
By Alex Stengel
It’s no secret the type of player Louisville has in Malik Cunningham.
Heck – Cunningham was one of the first players mentioned when Satterfield first started discussing players once he saw the team in person:
“Malik Cunningham has been one of the best athletes on our team. He’s incredible what he can do. I don’t want him standing on the sideline. He’s too good of a player. We’ll try to get him in the game wherever that may be.”
I agree.
And anyone that has seen Malik’s play on the field thus far will second that notion.
Cunningham was on and off the field quite a bit last season – starting in 3 games, but coming in for Pass on 4 other occasions.
Satterfield continues to preach that whichever QB consistently makes the quick and correct decisions on the field will be the starter on gamedays.
I believe that while Malik continues to work on his consistency with decision making and reading the field, there’s no doubt fans will still see the athletic speedster creating highlights on the field – even if Puma is QB1.
I am excited that Satterfield and staff not only recognize Cunningham’s natural athleticism and playmaking ability – but plan on utilizing him regardless of what position he plays.
Earlier this summer coach Satterfield made it clear that regardless of how the quarterback battle turned out, Malik Cunningham was going to be a valuable assett to this football team. He told Mark Ennis of 93.9 The Ville:
"“Malik Cunningham has been one of the best athletes on our team. He’s incredible what he can do. I don’t want him standing on the sideline. He’s too good of a player. We’ll try to get him in the game wherever that may be.”"
Louisville football has a lot of fun weapons on the offensive side of the ball this year, and Malik is no exception. He gives Louisville another homerun threat, who will draw the attention of the defense opening up the field for others if he’s not used to throw the ball.
There is concern over the knee injury which has kept him out of fall camp, putting him pretty far behind in the offense, but even if he’s not under center expect to see a lot of no. 3 when he returns back to the lineup.
Fan’s should be excited to see how Satterfield can creatively get the ball in Malik’s hands this year.
