As one of the best offensive linemen in the history of Louisville football, you have to put Roman Oben at the very top of any “best offensive linemen” discussion.

Oben, who played for the Cardinals from 1992 to 1995, is one of the most decorated offensive linemen in school history. Known for his physical dominance off the ball, there has never been a safer lineman to pass or run behind.

He was a First-Team All-American in 1994 by multiple publications after he didn’t allow a sack during the entire season. Imagine how confidence then-Louisville quarterback Marty Lowe felt with Oben lining up on his offensive line in every game.

In four years, Oben started every game on the Cards’ line, protecting and run-blocking for some of Louisville’s most memorable teams under Howard Schnellenberger and Ron Cooper.

Oben was also a two-sport athlete for the Cards. As a shot putter, Oben lettered in both sports through his career.

After his college days, Oben was a third-round pick by the New York Giants in the 1995 NFL Draft. There, he made a living as one of the most reliable linemen in franchise history and is still remembered mostly for his playing days in New York. Oben went on to win a Super Bowl, however, with the 2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Oben is now the Vice President of the NFL’s Youth and High School football strategy team. He has also been heavily involved in the NFLPA, advocating for player safety among other current player concerns.
