The defense came through, but there’s room for improvement

Don’t get me wrong, this Louisville defense really came through when they needed to do so on Saturday. There were three keys moments where the defense actually saved the day:

Monty Montgomery’s key takeaway at the goal line to take seven points off the board for BC.

Anthony Johnson’s interception, the first of the year for the Cards.

Keeping Boston College from crossing the 50-yard line on their final drive, when a field goal would have won the game.

These games played pivotal roles in Louisville coming out on top Saturday. They also held the Golden Eagles to 4/15 on 3rd down conversions. But there are still plenty of ways to improve.

The defense gave up 563 yards on Saturday, 304 of them through the air. Boston College did have an injury at starting quarterback in the 2nd quarter. Which may have really helped Louisville keep BC’s score at an already high 39. Anthony Brown was 6/7 with 193 yards and a touchdown before he exited Saturday.

Louisville still gave up some big plays through the air. But they did hold the Boston College backup, Dennis Grosel, to just a 37% completion percentage.

Things may have to be better defensively down the stretch in the ACC. But things were good enough on Saturday, good enough to even generate some bowl buzz for the first time in a long time.
