Louisville football: Awarding game balls to the Cards biggest performers
By Jacob Lane
Louisville football pulled off arguably their biggest win since FSU in 2016 over the weekend against no. 19 ranked Wake Forest. We hand out our weekly game balls to the Cardinals who shined.
How do I even begin to try and hand out just five game balls after what we saw from the Louisville football program over the weekend against no. 19 ranked Wake Forest.
First of all, I think it’s safe to say now that the Louisville program is a lot better than we thought heading into the season. As we look ahead to the rest of the season, it looks like six wins and a bowl game appearance in Scott Satterfield’s first season may be in the Cards.
After what we saw against a really good Wake Forest team on Saturday (ON THE ROAD!!), Louisville looks like a team that can compete with anyone. The offense was explosive once again, putting up 520 total yards and an incredible 62 points – the most since the upset win over no. 2 ranked Florida State back in 2016 when they scored 63.
We saw the wide receivers once again rise to the occasion, especially the three starters in Dez Fitzpatrick (third week over 100-yards receiving), Tutu Atwell, and Seth Dawkins. Even with Micale Cunningham suffering an injury midway through the game, the play of freshman Evan Conley allowed Louisville to not only compete on offense but look like one of the nation’s top teams.
The running attacked was slowed more than what we’ve been accustomed too, but behind big plays from Javian Hawkins, Hassan Hall, and both Cunningham and Conley they did just enough to pull out a major win against a really good ACC team – making it their first road win against a top 25 ACC win since joining the conference.
Some of the statistics from this one were wild, none more so than Wake Forest running 102 plays, but still losing the time of possession battle. Despite running 33 more plays than Louisville, Wake Forest only outgained the Cards by 148 yards – which proved how far the defense has come in the bend but don’t break scheme.
While it may sound crazy to say that, you have to consider that the Cards have had issues with depth all season, and will continue to for the remainder of the year. But just like against Boston College a week ago, they made plays when they needed to and did enough to escape with a huge win against the ACC’s top offensive team.
Without further ado, let’s hand out the game balls for Wake Forest.
