Evan Conley – QB

Stats: 12/18, 196 yards, 2 touchdowns, 1 interception, 7 carries, 79 yards, 1 touchdown

When Evan Conley committed to Louisville back in December of 2018, I honestly thought he’d never play a down for the Cards, but instead, provide depth as a backup to Jawon Pass and Micale Cunningham. I am thankful today that I am not a recruiting expert because I was extremely wrong.

On the young season we’ve now seen Evan Conley on three occasions – against Western Kentucky late in the game, against Boston College, and now in the matchup with Wake Forest. In all three games, not only has he proven he belongs but that he’s good to be the starter for a really good Louisville team.

In just six games, Conley has done that and more. After injuries to both Jawon Pass and Micale Cunningham, the freshman got his opportunity working endlessly to show what he could do and he showed he’s capable of leading the Cardinals at just 18 years old – engineering two game-winning drives in two weeks.

Against Wake Forest, once again Conley came into the game in relief for the injured Cunningham and once again he looked incredible. Conley went 196 yards and two touchdowns and running for another.

Conley showed poise in the pocket leading the offense with a ton of confidence, not missing a beat from where they had been with Cunningham under center. He also showed a great connection with Dez Fitzpatrick, targeting him five times, hitting him five times for 125 yards and two touchdowns.

But were Conley arguably showed the biggest Moxey was in the run game. While in at quarterback Conley ran the ball seven times for 79 yards, including the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter on 4th and 1 as well as a huge third-down run on 3rd and 18 – and actually led the nation’s 22nd best rushing team in total yards on the ground.

To be put this way, Conley is clutch. When the pressure is at its highest, he plays his best. Moving forward it wouldn’t be shocking to see Conley as the team’s starting quarterback.
