Will there be any more transfers?

One part of college football that continues to grow bigger and bigger every year is the transfer portal.

Each season hundreds and hundreds of players who no longer like their situation at their current school or think there is a better place out there for them flood to the portal looking for a new home. The Cardinal fans and the coaching staff are very familar with this as nearly 20-plus players ultimately made decisions to transfer away from Louisville this past off-season including several key players such as Jonathan Greenard, Jordan Travis, Colin Wilson, and Mike Boykin.

We already know that redshirt junior wide receiver Keion Wakefield will pursue the graduate-transfer path, announcing his intent to transfer just one day after the 45-13 loss to Kentucky.

There will likely be more transfers to come over the next month or so, as well as decisions to enter the NFL draft early, although I wouldn’t expect more than one or two of those.  Why would players transfer?

Well, even with the concerns about depth this season, Louisville had plenty of guys at a handful of different positions who weren’t able to crack the rotation for whatever reason. While each player will, of course, get a chance over the coming month to prove they belong in either a bigger role or a new one altogether, many will see the writing on the wall and decide a better opportunity exists somewhere else. Like we saw with Wakefield, graduating early and transferring for an immediate one (or two) final years of eligibility is also something we’ll likely see.

I won’t put any speculation out there as far as names go, but it wouldn’t be shocking to see Louisville have a few more transfers before officially getting to 2020.
