Who makes up Louisville football’s Mt. Rushmore of the last decade?
By Jacob Lane
Lamar Jackson – Quarterback (2015-2017)
One of the greatest quarterbacks in college football history, Lamar Jackson was impossible to exclude from this list. His career stats are jaw-dropping. 9,043 passing yards, 69 passing touchdowns, 4,132 rushing yards, and total 50 rushing touchdowns.
We must not also forget that the majority of his was work as the primary starter (he had 51 touchdowns in one season, 51!) was done in just two seasons. Passing or rushing, those stats mutually exclusive are very impressive and the fact that Lamar managed to do all of that is simply amazing, especially considering things like the offensive line struggles and the coaching staff.
With his very impressive stats and incredible highlights also came some pretty prestigious awards and accolades for Lamar:
- 2 Time ACC Player of the Year
- 2 Time ACC Offensive Player of the Year
- 2016 Heisman Trophy Winner
- 2016 Unanimous All-American
- 2016 Walter Camp Award
- 2016 Maxwell Award Winner
- 2016 AP Player of the Year
- 2016 Sporting News Player of the Year
- 2017 Heisman Finalist
- 2018 ACC Athlete of the Year
- 2018 NFL first-round draft pick
- Soon to be NFL MVP at just 22 years old
Simply the fact that all of this can be done at Louisville, means so much to the present and future of Louisville Football. For two years, a Louisville player was the show and the talk of college football, something that hasn’t been the case in program history.
Lamar Jackson owned college football for two full seasons and he did it here. He was arguably the face of college sports in 2016. For those reasons, Lamar is not only deserving to be on the Mount Rushmore of Louisville football for the decade but also is hands down the top player in program history.
