Louisville basketball: What are the Cards getting in Jay Scrubb?
Work ethic and commitment
The old cliche might be a little tired, especially for someone as talented as Jay Scrubb is, but the consensus around the country is that Scrubb is an absolute animal for the game of basketball.
Kyle Smithpeters, Scrubb’s head coach at John A. Logan, had this to say about Scrubb:
"He’s done a good job of creating a great work ethic. He’s a guy who has really understood and really fits the idea of trying to bring it every single day. There’s always stuff to work on. You can have the work ethic, you can have the tools, and you can tie them together to have the chance to be a special player."
Scrubb credits his improved academic career as part of his turnaround, after receiving very little in the way of offers out of high school. He has developed his game in a myriad of ways and made appearances at several major camps in the summer, such as the USA Camp and the Nike Skills Academy.
His maturity and leadership both on and off the court will play a huge factor for the Cardinals next season. With a huge chunk of the team departing, having a guy like Scrubb who has been through the junior college experience will benefit the Cards tremendously.
Not only that but Scrubb himself has said, “As a Junior College player, you only have two years to make an impact, I want to go somewhere, where that is understood.” And if it is understood anywhere, it would be Louisville basketball. Not only does Louisville have a history with Juco players, but transfers as well. Guys like Damion Lee, Fresh Kimble, and even former Final Four MVP Luke Hancock, have all come to Louisville and played big roles, just to name a few.
Not only does he bring an outstanding work ethic and mentality to the team, but Scrubb also brings basketball skill that is rare even at the top levels of college basketball. Here is how he is going to contribute for the Cards on the court, on both ends of the floor.
