January 18, 2020 – Dwayne Sutton vs Syracuse

Dwayne Sutton was an energy spark for the Cardinals all season. He was always seen playing key defense, interrupting the passing lanes, and scoring in the fast break. Sutton was a local favorite, graduating from Manual High School in Louisville. He was a finalist for Kentucky’s Mr. Basketball award, however, was not recruited by a large number of schools.

Sutton decided to attend UNC Asheville, but shortly after decided to return home to Louisville. After sitting out the 2016-17 season, he followed that by coming off the bench the next season and receiving 15 minutes a game. This led him to be a senior leader and key contributor this past season.

Against Syracuse on February 19th, Sutton had a key performance in a dominating 90-66 win. Again, this was another efficient performance. He only had six shots from the floor but converted on five of them. He finished with 16 points and 8 rebounds, almost grabbing his sixth double-double. He had five assists, a block, and a steal to fill up the stat sheet. In 35 minutes, he was over 80 percent from the field, hitting three out of his four three-point attempts.

In the press conference after the game, Mack said the Cardinals won this game because of their attitude and mentality. With Sutton’s gameplay, a lot of that starts with him. He was a player that was truly a jack of all trades, and that was nice to see out of a local kid. Chris Mack has discussed how far he has come and ended his tenure at UofL as a pivotal player.
