Boston Celtics

One team that is not expected to have a ton of cap space this offseason but could be the in the market for a frontcourt upgrade is the Boston Celtics. After losing their long time anchor in Al Horford last offseason, they were left with a fairly weak market at center and chose to sign Enes Kanter as a stopgap to pair with Daniel Theis.

The duo was mostly meh, albeit effective enough to win basketball games, and it could lead the team to make a move in order to push themselves into another tier of championship competing teams. With the addition of Kemba Walker to play alongside budding stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown and a healthy Gordon Hayward, the Celtics appeared to be missing one last final piece.

Enter Montrezl Harrell.

While a deal would most likely have to take place via a sign & trade due to the Celtics cap restrictions, Harrell may be a near-perfect fit for a team ready to compete with the best of the best.

The Celtics desperately missed having a rim runner and player capable of not only cleaning the glass but being able to finish or get to the free throw line. While Harrell isn’t necessarily a back to the basket player, his skill in the screen and roll with Walker, Tatum and Brown could be lethal due to his athleticism and ability to play way above the rim.

The makings of a deal would be rather tricky as the Celtics cap issues are fairly similar to the Clippers. With a ton of money tied up in Kemba Walker, Gordon Hayward and Jaylen Brown and an extension looming for their highest-profile star in Tatum, a deal would have to be a sign & trade.

What the Celtics have to offer the Clippers don’t necessarily lineup but my guess is a package like Marcus Smart, Daniel Thies/Enes Kanter, Romeo Langford and a few draft picks could work.

Adding Harrell would push the Celtics into some fairly expensive waters, but his presence would immediately give Boston a legitimate big upfront to play alongside their wings. Not to mention, Boston fans would LOVE Harrell.
