Round 1 vs. Virginia – February 8, 2020

This one certainly felt good. Virginia has been the kryptonite of the Cards in recent years, so beating them was a victory sweeter than most. Nwora posted 22 points along with seven rebounds and one steal.

This was a huge game for several reasons, but it was a big win to end a nine game losing streak at the hands of the Cavaliers going all the way back to 2015. The Cavaliers seemed to be a monkey the Cards simply could not get off their back. Let’s not even look back to the horrendous final seconds of the game late in 2018 when the Cards had seemingly all but wrapped up a victory against the top ranked UVA squad. Needless to say, Virginia isn’t a school Cardinal fans are particularly fond of.

Nwora and the Cards came out hot in the first half. Nwora led the team putting up 15 first half points on 6-9 shooting, 3-5 from three point range. The Cards kept their foot on the gas for the entire first half, taking a 14 point lead into the break with the score 44-30 in favor of the Cardinals.

The Cards didn’t exactly light it up in the second half of the game, as Virginia outscored the Cards 43-36. Nwora slowed down a tad as well, making just one of five attempts. However, he finished the half a perfect four of four at the free throw line, which is always a key to victory. Despite Virginia’s second half push, the Cards were able to secure a key victory in the race for the ACC.

Head coach Chris Mack praised Nwora’s shooting ability and how it helps the rest of his teammates saying:

"“I’ve said it all year, I think Ryan and Jordan are elite-level shooters. I also think a guy like Darius, when he doesn’t have the pressure of running the point at times, he’s a really good three-point shooter. I think the other guys get a little confidence from watching their teammates shoot the ball. We can shoot it.”"
