Louisville football: Cards’ top candidate for each ACC award next season
By Jacob Lane
ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year – Tee Webb
2019 winner: Sam Howell, QB, North Carolina
Alright, before you click out of the article because you think I’m crazy just hear me out.
We saw last season that quarterback Micale Cunningham struggled a ton with injuries throughout the season. It all started with a freak knee injury in training camp which was dinged up more times than I could count along the way and was followed by a variety of nagging lower-body bumps and bruises. Thankfully, Cunningham’s injuries weren’t ever serious enjoy to cause him to miss extended periods of time. In the game of football, things happen and if Cunningham were to go down with an injury, there’s potential that incoming freshman Tee Webb could step in to provide relief.
It’s a long shot, I get it. More than that actually. But if Cunningham were to go down, who says that Satterfield wouldn’t turn to HIS guy in Webb and let him have a season to figure things out instead of playing last season’s back up Evan Conley or former starter Jawon Pass?
Again, I know it’s a far out there thought, especially considering Webb is likely to redshirt this year, but if any one player is going to win this particular award for Louisville it would hands down have to be him. Why do you ask? Past winners have all but maybe a few exceptions played three positions; quarterback, running back, and receiver. Due to the fire-power returning at receiver and running back, the odds of one of the incoming players getting enough snaps to win an award of this caliber, it’s just not possible.
That leaves Webb, who could find himself in at quarterback if next year is anything like what we saw for Satterfield and company last year.
In a scenario where Webb is playing for Louisville, it’s not crazy to think that he could step in and provide the same caliber season that North Carolina got out of star quarterback and award winner, Sam Howell last season.
Webb was one of the top quarterbacks in the class of 2020 coming off of a monster senior season at Cartersville HS in Georgia where he threw for almost 3,000 yards and 27 touchdowns while running for another three. Webb has a strong and accurate arm and is more than capable of playing within the pocket or using his legs to extend plays. He is a great fit for the Satterfield offense, and while he’s still raw, there’s no doubt he could succeed right away (should he need to)
Much like Trevor Lawrence, who Webb backed up for two seasons in high school, the freshman quarterback is on the thinner side and will need some time with Strength coach Mike Sirigano in order to be ready to play at the ACC. But at 6’5, he has great size, takes great care of the football by not turning it over, and is mobile enough to be dangerous. Not to mention, giving him weapons at nearly every position would help him even more to get comfortable and keep the Louisville offense and program on a winning level.
I’m not a gambler, but I still understand how unlikely this scenario is, but should Webb be inserted into the lineup as a starter the potential is there for him to win right away and do so at a high level.
