No. 1 – David Jones – Wing

6’6, 195-pounds – Scott Depot, WV

Recruiting status: Final 7

While El Ellis and Jalen Warley may be names that you’ve heard for a while now, David Jones is one you may not be nearly as familar with when it comes to the targets for Chris Mack. However, if I were to put money on who would be the next commitment, I’d go all-in on Jones.

Quietly, Jones has become one of the top targets on the wing for the Cards following an incredible junior season, one that the Teays Valley Christian School head coach classified as the “best season for any individual in program history,” where he averaged over 25 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals per game. Jones ranks right outside the consensus top 100 rankings for 2021 but holds offers from several prominent programs including Oregon and Maryland and is a player to watch for the Cards.

According to Cardinal Authority and other sources, Jones has recently met with the coaching staff via Zoom and has seen and heard enough to include the Cards in his final list of seven schools.

On the offensive side of the ball he can just go get a bucket. He’s 6-6, long and extremely strong. Every college coach that we talk to, they know he can get to the basket, he can finish, and he shoots it extremely well out to 23 or 24 feet,” his high school coach Travis Tarr told 247 Sports’ Evan Daniels.

Louisville needs all the bucket-getters they can get, especially ones who can “shoot it at an elite level and he can really score,” as Tarr said about his star player.

His athleticism, ability to shoot, size, and international experience (a new trend that has emerged for Mack) playing for the Dominican Republic, are all reasons why Mack has Jones so high on his board of players. He’ll compete with  Houston, Pittsburgh, Maryland, Oregon, Clemson and Illinois for Jones’ services, and in a perfect world, there would be no reason to think that Louisville couldn’t and shouldn’t win that battle.

However, the NCAA punishment and investigation makes things trickier than usual. Even with that being the case, I’ve got all the confidence in the world that with the combination of great facilities, playing time, ability to win, and program prestige will help Mack seal the deal and do so sooner rather than later.
