Analysis and Outlook

Newest Louisville football commit Derrick Edwards projects as a safety at the next level, but will also give defensive coordinator Bryan Brown another versatile player capable playing at cornerback if needed. Despite not possessing elite speed, he has good instincts, footwork, and athleticism. Not only that, but he is rarely ever out of position; he keeps his eyes on the opposing quarterback while keeping up with receivers in coverage. Edwards is a tough, intelligent defender that can make an impact in coverage or roaming throughout the defensive backfield.

Edwards is also projected to be a solid special teams contributor, as he has a knack for getting to the ball and delivering hard hits. Brown and his defensive coaching staff have put an emphasis on bringing in guys who can make plays in a variety of ways, and Edwards fits the bill. The Cardinals currently have five safeties on the roster, with Russ Yeast and Isaiah Hayes using up their final year of eligibility in 2020. As mentioned, the Cards already hold two commitments at the position, but there’s a strong likelihood that Perry slides up and plays outside at the ‘CARD’ position.

Starting right away is not likely, but it is not far-fetched to say that Edwards could contribute in year one. His versatility could find him on the field in a multitude of roles. Due to the need of the position, I can’t see him redshirting, but instead filling a key reserve role while being a frequent member of the special teams unit.
